What Is an Occupational Therapy Driving Assessment?

An OT Driving Assessment evaluates a person’s ability to drive safely following a medical condition, cognitive change, physical injury, or upon request from VicRoads or a medical professional. It includes both off‑road and on‑road components. These assessments help determine:

  • Whether you are safe to continue driving
  • What supports, strategies, or vehicle modifications may be needed
  • Any training or medical report requirements
  • Your readiness for VicRoads licence review

What the Assessment Consists Of

Conducted at your home or agreed location.
This includes screening of:

  • Cognitive abilities (attention, memory, decision‑making)
  • Vision and perception
  • Physical strength, range of movement & coordination
  • Sensory processing
  • Driving history and medical background

Completed in a dual‑controlled vehicle with an accredited driving instructor.
Together with the OT, you will be assessed on:

  • Navigation and road law knowledge
  • Reaction time & hazard perception
  • Vehicle control and speed choice
  • Gap selection, decision‑making & intersection management
  • Ability to manage complex traffic environments

After both components, your OT will prepare a formal report that may include:

  • Fitness to drive outcome
  • Recommended lessons, therapy or adaptive equipment
  • Modifications (if required)
  • Recommendations to VicRoads (for licence review decisions)
  • NDIS reporting when applicable
